1. Clowns
Dressing up as clowns is so much fun and super easy! There are many ways you can dress up as a clown. You can be traditional clowns, vintage clowns, scary clowns, you name it. Whatever you can find in your closet can work if you get a little creative. I found a striped silk scarf and tied it as a large bowtie. We also fashioned a red scrunchie into a bowtie for Ross. lol! We already had the black dress, checkered pants, and striped socks so this was very quick to pull together. The biggest part about this outfit is getting the right face makeup. Having a white base is key, then have fun with the details using black eye liner, eyeshadow, red lipstick, and whatever else you’d like. Everyone will know that you’re a clown if you have good makeup! I recommend this white makeup for a consistent base. In the photo above, we used white makeup from the thrift store. It did the job, however, I liked the white makeup we used for our skeletons look below much better.
If you don’t have what you’re looking for in your closet already, a quick stop at your local thrift store will give you a ton of options. Look for party hats, tutus for a ruffled collar, stripes, spots, Halloween makeup kits, or simply a red nose.
2. Astronaut & Shooting Star
This costume is so cute and pretty simple to put together. If you have a day, you can quickly gather what you need.
For the shooting star costume, I cut out stars from gold glitter paper and glued them to cut pieces of wire. I then wrapped the wire around a headband to complete my star headpiece. For my outfit, I found a gold glittery jacket at a thrift store and wore a gold skirt I already owned. Anything gold or yellow works for this costume. A yellow dress would be perfect! I finished my outfit with some gold stars around my eyes, attached with vaseline.
For the astronaut costume, Ross grabbed a coverall from the hardware store. I printed out an American flag and glued that on the sleeve for extra detail. For the rocket pack, we spray painted 2 gallon bottles with silver spray paint, glued them together, and attached some straps from an old bag we weren’t using anymore. Finally, we added some paper flames coming out of the bottle. This costume was a blast!
3. Witch & Jack-O-Lantern
A witch and Jack-O-Lantern is a fun twist on a traditional costume. The most time consuming part of this costume is carving the pumpkin. Make sure to cut the bottom of the pumkin big enough for your head to fit through. Ross wore all black and a ski mask under the pumpkin to keep his hair from getting dirty.
For my witch costume, I wore black items I already had in my closet, with gloves I found from the thrift store and added a spider web cape and witch hat that I’ve had since my childhood. Thrift stores are such a great place to find last minute Halloween pieces if you don’t already have what you need.
Feel free to mix it up and be two witches or two Jack-O-Lanterns. You can also reuse the Jack-O-Lanterns by putting them out on your porch for your Halloween decorations.
4. Back to the Future: Doc & Marty McFly
If you have a red puffer vest laying around like we did, Doc and Marty McFly is such an easy costume! I wore the red vest over a jean jacket and blue button up shirt. I just wore jeans and tennis shoes for the rest of the outfit and put sunglasses on my head. I didn’t even have a watch, but my acting skills were pretty convincing.
Another costume where a white coverall comes in handy is Doc. Ross wore a coverall with a tool belt around his waist. As you can see, he added some beers to pass out in his tool belt. lol! The hardest part to find was the white wig to complete the mad scientist look. We ended up grabbing a wig from Walmart, since we did not find any at our local thrift stores. It did the job!
5. Skeletons
Finally, Skeletons is one of the easiest last minute Halloween costumes. All you need is some white and black makeup to paint your face. Then, simply wear black and white outfits. You could even take it a step further and paint skeleton rib cages on t-shirts. We used this white makeup for the base of our skeleton makeup and then black eye sticks and black eye liner for the details.
Ross and I dressed up as skeletons and handed out candy on Halloween one year. It was fun to see the kids’ reactions!
